Common Cents is a DISD program which raises money for charity and nonprofit organizations, while encouraging good citizenship and social responsibility in students. The idea for the program was brought to the district by Dallas philanthropist Louise Gartner to teach children to make a difference in their community.
Dallas ISD students have raised and donated nearly $450,000 in the 12 years they have participated in the program.
For 2010, Dallas ISD students from 40 schools participated in this student-led coin collection. They collected more than $49,000 in pennies and other spare change through the Common Cents campaign and donated that money to 24 local nonprofit and charity organizations. HSDC / Dog & Kitty City was one of the lucky recipients of a donation from Dallas Environment Science Academy. We thank and salute this incredible group of students who give so generously to their community.
